Catching the learning wave

Is this generation ruled by gadgets? Sometimes it makes me think whether it is just my hubby who is obsessed with new technology... mainly mobile phones, tablets, laptop, other Discount iPhone Accessories and trinkets. However when I start to think about it, even my dad has a new phone every year. My mom is the same, as well as my other siblings (well most of them!) who's phone model I have lost track of. Myself on the other hand would prefer to stick with the same phone brand forever if that's possible. I guess in that aspect I am not much of a "risk" taker. I prefer to use things which I am comfortable with, for as long as they are working I do not find the need to replace them. Sometimes even when it looks old and haggard already, to the annoyance of my gadget hungry husband.

We all have our own opinion and preference about these things, and I just choose to live simply with what is there and what is still working. One thing that frustrates me the most is when I can't figure out how to operate a new complex television remote. One time I was fiddling with the tv remote for half an hour trying to turn it on!! But I digress .. I feel the same way with mobile phones and other gadgets. Quite frustrating when I couldn't seem to grasp the rhythym of touch screen messaging. Now, I am in love with the Iphone!! Wouldn't go back to Nokia, and wouldn't convert to a Blackberry. Oh I suppose just until the next time I catch the learning wave!

I still keep coming back

No matter how busy I am I will always be back online sooner or later. Whether that is to update my online journal, search the net for Venetian Masquerade masks, do some travel works, etc. Much of my world revolves around the internet, just like more than half of the world's population today. Hubby and I were talking the other week about how much the world relied on technology, particularly the internet. Should the entire internet 'network' fail there would definitely be chaos everywhere. Truly there is more to the net than doing online shopping and searching for Venetian Face masks.

Site project

I am always on the look out for a good web hosting site that someone like me (techonologically challenged) would be comfortable using. I was browsing around and have come across a site that suits me well. Now, the only thing I need to find is time to do all these things. I would like to renovate my site and add a few things, improve on the layout and colour. It has been over a year since I've given proper attention to my website and I would probably need to dedicate more time here if I want to see this project through. Only time will tell!

Techie Web stuff

So much for trying to be a techie geek, I haven't really been very successful in searching for a new theme or layout for this cyber space of mine. It was hard enough to find a web hosting service that suited my needs (eg, user friendly, easy to follow, etc). Do have a read through my host as they do have quite a good interface and simple instructions on setting up a site. Now, I wish I can have more time to surf for some colourful layouts. However, I have an appointment in an hour! So, I will do more searching later in the day. Oh dear!

Choosing and Comparing

Everyone who's maintained a website (or two, or three) at some point did a hosting comparison. For the technology challenged ones, like me, it is not a very easy decision. Endless research can be frustrating. It's good that I have found a simple website that pretty much gives me straight forward answers about description, benefits and other necessary details on hosting. I have just renewed my subscription for one of my sites, and I am happy that I don't have to think about this again for at least another year! In the mean time, I can busy myself with trying to improve layout designs and all that!

Our new baby

Okay, it's not really mine. But this now means hubby and I are able to surf the net on the couch together! Hehe! We bought a very portable Dell Inspiron Notebook. It's only 8.9" and is I think 1 kg. Very handy for those out of town trips as well. It's only for browsing and surfing the net as the hard drive memory is only 16 GB. We have an external hard drive to store our files anyway so that is not an issue. We wanted the white one, but they did not have it in stock so we settled with black.
What new gadget have you bought recently? I am not really a very techie person, but since I am married to one my tech knowledge is increasing over time!

Those were the days

I remember a few years ago when hubby was still in Manila, and I was still studying. At the university library they blocked a lot of web based chat sites and we were looking for Free Online Chat that we could use. During those times internet phone technology was still in it's early stages, and my mobile network did not support those sort of things. How I wish they already had those in place back then so that my phone bill did not rack up hundreds of dollars! But oh well, I'm just really glad he is here with me now. The joys of olden days long distance relationships!

Tech rant (again)

I’ve never been a real techie person, and so when I was starting out in this blog bandwagon I did endless research on a good web hosting site. I found out that I did not really have to be a tech geek or an IT graduate to be able to run my own site. It still has its challenges, and it does take me a lot longer to do my widget configurations and all that, but I manage (in some ways). I have been thinking about changing my site layout again, but I am just not prepared to go through having to adjust all the settings and all that just yet. Maybe when my boyfriend heads off overseas for two weeks I will be able to work on this.

How easy to get Information Nowadays

I am amazed at how great the modern society is at information. I have come across reverse lookup database that can track the owner for any phone number in the United States and Canada. What is interesting is that the whole process is a discreet and easy procedure that no one will have a clue about investigating on that telephone stalker, or that old strange high school sweetheart trying to be in contact again. Truly the whole process is the most confidential one. I might suggest this to my friend who has been getting calls from telemarketers and stalkers alike.

My cup of IT

Okay, with all these technology propping up here and there in your face, how can one keep up? For a business person I am sure this poses more of a challenge. Especially for those businesses that would like to reach their market through the internet. With software as a service available now, it is easier to create a business plan, or make use of software that works for the business. There is even hosted team foundation server available to those who don’t want to be involved in too much technicalities of a seemingly easy job: maintaining the business and earning the big bucks. At work now, I know that remote access devices are in place for support required from off shore technicians. I also know that they have managed to find cheap web conferencing for those urgent and crucial meetings of minds. I am in awe by all these things available nowadays. Sooner or later the unimaginable would be somewhat ordinary. My appreciation goes out to all those involved in the IT industry who strive to make this world an easier place to live and work in.

What would you do if you were the Richest Man in the world?

Just watched a special feature on BBC Channel on Bill Gates and his empire. It just blew me away. The segment feature Bill Gates and his beginnings, his interests, his young adult life, background and how his interest in computers and technology led him to create the mega company Microsoft. In the interview it was said that Gates made so much money and that if quantified, he’s been earning about $5 million a day, since 1975. That means he is worth more than about $68 billion dollars! I probably won’t even make $5 million in my lifetime, and here he is just doing that overnight! The interviewer mentioned that Bill Gates likes burgers, and that with his earnings, he could give each person on the planet (all 60 billion people) a hamburger (costing say a dollar each), and he would still have about $6 billion left as a change.
The good thing though about Bill Gates, or at least what the interview made me believe, is that he is not a greedy person. Him and his wife, Melinda, have invested and created a foundation in the interest of education, world health and population. Gates has actually invested billions of dollars to funding research on malaria, and is aiming to make an impact on every person’s life by him contributing his earnings for the benefit of the world. Husband and wife Bill and Melinda Gates have decided to give back to the public what they have earned, instead of acquiring properties or giving this to their children as inheritance. Really, one can see that they are quite a well grounded couple.
He's one of those people who looks like all their lives they've just been using their brains. By choice or by not, I think the world needs more people like him. Making good use of his talent and his resources.

Listening to radio stations

My boyfriend is always the first to know or hear about whatever new gadget there is around. Well, at least, between the two of us he usually knows more about technology than me. However, when I asked him about high definition radio he wasn’t quite all knowing about this. I told him to go and just surf the internet about this, so that we could listen to new radio stations, instead of the old ones that we used to listen to. I have yet to find out whether iTunes Tagging can work on my Iphone. I am pretty sure it will work, I would just need to read more about it. Just thinking about this excites me! I will have to ask the girls at work if they know about this. This whole new revolution of listening to high definition sound is exciting! Out with the analog ways, and move in with digital!

There's a reason why

There's a reason for everything.

A reason to why I'm not in the IT industry.. as you can see I am struggling with my blog layout. I've been fiddling with it for days and I am not successful. It's kinda frustrating. Over the next few weeks I'd still be tinkering with this layout, themes, templates, etc. With my trip coming up I may not be able to spend as much time doing this as I want.

So far, I like how the template looks like, but I can't seem to add a menu at the header part. And my widgets are stretching when I try to add something maybe too big? (No matter if I resize it). I've got other issues, but I like the colour and all, so I may stick with this Aspire template for now.

Just now I realise I have quite a few tags to accomplish. I've been slack in doing them cause I was busy trying to be my own IT helpdesk. :) Oh well.... Life goes on..

Iphones are the new hip thing!

Yesterday I went to the beach with friends. It's been a while since I've seen them. One of them, a Russian guy had the new iphone. He was so much into his new gadget that he was endlessly talking about how much time he's been spending playing and tinkering with this amazing toy. He's even mentioned what iphone mods he's into as well as what iphone wallpapers he's recently downloaded. He was particularly excited about one iphone wallpaper he's uploaded which had an image of his dream car : a sleek, red porsche. I've told him about the site planet-iphones.com and immediately when he got home he's sent me a message about how much he's into the site! He's downloaded a few applications and some more wallpapers. I wouldn't be surprised if I see him again in the next couple of weeks that he would have purchased a few more accessories such as a new clear silicone case and a headphone adapter. There's just so much accessories available to make one's iphone hip and trend.

My Russian friend even tried to convince my other male friends to get one! Let's see the next time I see them whether he's able to influence the other people from our group! The joys of technology!
